Unmerge MCP server: image to layers in your AI agent

A remote MCP server at https://unmerge.app/mcp (Streamable HTTP). Add it to Claude Code, Cursor or Codex with your API key, then ask the agent to split an image into layers.

Get a key

Sign in, confirm your email address, and create a key on Account › API keys. The key is shown once. Keep it out of shared code; anyone with it can spend the credits on your account. Revoke it there if it leaks.

Connect

Claude Code

Run in a terminal:

claude mcp add --transport http unmerge https://unmerge.app/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer um_YOUR_KEY"

Cursor

Add to ~/.cursor/mcp.json:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "unmerge": {
      "url": "https://unmerge.app/mcp",
      "headers": {
        "Authorization": "Bearer um_YOUR_KEY"
      }
    }
  }
}

Codex

Add to ~/.codex/config.toml, then export UNMERGE_API_KEY=um_YOUR_KEY:

[mcp_servers.unmerge]
url = "https://unmerge.app/mcp"
bearer_token_env_var = "UNMERGE_API_KEY"

Other clients: use the URL above with the header Authorization: Bearer um_YOUR_KEY.

Tools

  • split_into_layers: Upload an image (URL or base64) with an optional prompt and start a split. Waits up to 50 seconds and returns the layers, or a project id to check later.
  • get_layers: Status of a split. When ready: every layer with its name, position and a PNG URL.
  • unlock_layers: When a split returned more layers than the credits held, pay the difference to get the files.
  • get_credits: Credits left on the account.

Things to ask

  • Split https://example.com/poster.png into layers and give me the PNG links.
  • Separate the person, the bike and the background in this image.
  • How many Unmerge credits do I have left?

The agent gets PNG links for each layer. To export a PSD, open the workspace link it returns.

Credits and limits

  • Same credits as the website: 1 credit per layer returned, at most 17 layers per image. You need at least 5 credits to start a split.
  • Images: PNG, JPG or WebP, up to 10 MB and 4 megapixels. Send a file, a public https URL, or base64.
  • Optional prompt: what to separate, in plain words, up to 500 characters.
  • A split runs in the background. Poll the project until its status is no longer processing.
  • Layer download URLs work for one hour. Get the project again for fresh ones.
  • Projects made with the API belong to your account and are kept until you delete them in My projects or delete the account, like projects made on the website.
  • Each key allows 120 requests a minute. Keys are shown once; you can have 5 active keys.
