# Unmerge > Unmerge splits a flat image into named transparent layers, fills in what was hidden behind them, and exports a layered PSD. Samples are free to try and download. Separate your own PNG, JPG or WebP for $1.90, no account or subscription. ## Key facts - Input: A PNG, JPG or WebP up to 10 MB and 4 megapixels. Choose an image and pay for it in the workspace, or sign in and use credits; the image stays in your browser until you pay or confirm. - Samples: Real results with 4 to 13 layers each, shown as the model returned them. Each one lists what the model changed. - Output: A layered PSD, a PNG ZIP of transparent layers, a composite PNG, or one layer as a PNG. Layers are raster images, returned at 1K, or at 2K on the Ultra plan. - Each layer: Has a name and a position on the canvas, in stacking order. - Hidden areas: Filled in by the model. They are plausible rather than recovered from the original. - Text: Comes back as separate layers of pixels, not as editable type. - Price: Single split $1.90 for one image, up to 17 layers, all included, no account needed. If 3 tries return no layers, the payment is refunded automatically. If you are not happy with the layers, the workspace lets you refund it yourself once. Credits: One credit is one layer returned, background layer included. A split returns at most 17 layers; you need at least 5 credits to start and you are charged for the layers returned. Basic pack $10 for 100 credits ($0.10 a layer); Pro $21 a month for 300 credits a month ($0.07 a layer), or $210 a year for 300 credits a month, 3,600 a year ($0.058 a layer); Ultra $36 a month for 300 credits a month with layers at 2K ($0.12 a layer). Pack credits never expire. Pro and Ultra credits are issued each month and unused ones expire at the end of that month. Samples and their downloads are free. - Storage: Images you separate and their layers stay on your account until you delete them; a single split is kept for 30 days. Demo edits and images you have not separated stay in your browser. - Support: support@unmerge.app - Updated: October 31, 2026 ## When not to use it - You need the original layered file. A flat JPG or PNG does not contain one; Unmerge makes new layers from the visible pixels. - You need editable text or vector shapes. Text and shapes come back as pixels. - You need the hidden parts to be exact. Areas behind an object are generated, so they are plausible rather than recovered. ## Showcase - [Folk art collage](https://unmerge.app/showcase/folk-art-collage): A black-and-white photo with folk-craft objects and cartoon characters added. 8 layers as the model returned them; hide one to see what was filled in behind it. - [Mars magazine cover](https://unmerge.app/showcase/mars-cover): A headline that sits behind the subject. 4 layers as the model returned them; hide one to see what was filled in behind it. - [Festival flyer](https://unmerge.app/showcase/festival-flyer): Text printed over a photo, plus a sticker badge. 6 layers as the model returned them; hide one to see what was filled in behind it. - [Coffee bag ad](https://unmerge.app/showcase/coffee-ad): A product, props, and a headline on one surface. 8 layers as the model returned them; hide one to see what was filled in behind it. - [Food sticker sheet](https://unmerge.app/showcase/sticker-sheet): Nine stickers on a white sheet. 10 layers as the model returned them; hide one to see what was filled in behind it. - [Sneaker sale poster](https://unmerge.app/showcase/sale-sneaker): A product lying across large type. 5 layers as the model returned them; hide one to see what was filled in behind it. - [Missing cat flyer](https://unmerge.app/showcase/missing-cat): A photo, handwritten lines, and tear-off tabs. 12 layers as the model returned them; hide one to see what was filled in behind it. - [Four-product flat lay](https://unmerge.app/showcase/flat-lay): Four products on a plain backdrop. 5 layers as the model returned them; hide one to see what was filled in behind it. - [Soda can ad](https://unmerge.app/showcase/soda-ad): A can with fruit, ice, and a splash around it. 11 layers as the model returned them; hide one to see what was filled in behind it. - [Game item sheet](https://unmerge.app/showcase/game-items): Four hand-painted items in a row. 5 layers as the model returned them; hide one to see what was filled in behind it. - [Rainy street illustration](https://unmerge.app/showcase/rainy-street): A character between a foreground prop and a busy street. 13 layers as the model returned them; hide one to see what was filled in behind it. ## API and MCP - HTTP API: https://unmerge.app/api/v1, Bearer API key from https://unmerge.app/account/api. Docs: https://unmerge.app/docs/api - Remote MCP server (Streamable HTTP): https://unmerge.app/mcp, same key. Tools: split_into_layers, get_layers, unlock_layers, get_credits. Setup for Claude Code, Cursor and Codex: https://unmerge.app/docs/mcp - Same credits as the website: 1 credit per layer returned, at most 17 layers per image. You need at least 5 credits to start a split. - Images: PNG, JPG or WebP, up to 10 MB and 4 megapixels. Send a file, a public https URL, or base64. - Optional prompt: what to separate, in plain words, up to 500 characters. - A split runs in the background. Poll the project until its status is no longer processing. - Layer download URLs work for one hour. Get the project again for fresh ones. - Projects made with the API belong to your account and are kept until you delete them in My projects or delete the account, like projects made on the website. - Each key allows 120 requests a minute. Keys are shown once; you can have 5 active keys. ## Questions and answers ### Can I separate my own image right now? Yes. Choose an image and describe what to separate in the workspace, or leave the description empty. Without an account you pay $1.90 for that image and get every layer returned, up to 17; a link to the result is emailed to you. With an account you can use credits instead: one credit per layer returned, and you need at least 5 to start. The image is uploaded only when you pay or confirm. ### Can I turn a photo into separate layers? Yes. Unmerge, an image to layers tool, splits a flat image such as a photo, poster or product shot into named transparent layers and fills in what was hidden behind them. Choose a PNG, JPG or WebP up to 10 MB and 4 megapixels and confirm in the workspace. Filled areas are generated and the model can redraw details, so results for your image will differ from the samples. ### How is image to layers different from background removal? Background removal cuts out one subject and discards the rest. Unmerge, an image to layers tool, returns every element it finds as its own named transparent layer, plus a background with the hidden areas filled in. You can hide or move any layer and export all of them as a layered PSD or a PNG ZIP. ### How many layers does an image get? It depends on the image, and the model decides: the real results on this site returned 4 to 13 layers each. A split returns at most 17 layers, and you are charged one credit per layer returned. ### What is inside the PSD download? Samples and your own separated images export independent raster layers with their names, stacking order, and visibility. You can move each layer in a PSD editor. Text, shapes, and effects are not restored as native editable design objects. ### Does this recover the original Photoshop file? No. A flat JPG or PNG does not contain its original design layers. AI layer generation creates a new layered document from the visible pixels; it does not recover the original source file. ### What happens to areas hidden behind an object? The layer model fills them in. In our samples it completed the letters behind an astronaut helmet and the crowd under a sticker. Filled areas are generated, so they are plausible rather than recovered from the original. ### What sizes work? Your own image can be a PNG, JPG, or WebP up to 10 MB and 4 megapixels. Layers come back at about one megapixel, for example 832 × 1248, so the result can be smaller than the original. Samples export at 832 × 1248, 1248 × 832, or 1024 × 1024 pixels. ### Are the sample results edited? No. Each sample is the model output for one flat image. Layer names, order, and positions are shown as returned, and each sample lists what the model changed, such as redrawn details or a layer placed in the wrong order. ### Are downloads free? Demo PNG, PNG ZIP, and layered PSD downloads are free. Exporting layers from an image you separated costs nothing extra: you pay for the layers when they are returned. ### Can I get a refund? A single split ($1.90) that returns no layers in 3 tries is refunded automatically. If you do not like the layers, the workspace has a “Not satisfied” refund you can use once; your reason, note and description are emailed to us so we can improve. For anything else, within 7 days of a payment, including a subscription renewal, email support@unmerge.app and tell us what went wrong. We review each request and reply by email. A refunded subscription payment also ends the subscription. ### Where are my projects stored? Demo edits and images you have not separated stay in this browser on this device. Images you separate, and their layers, are stored on Unmerge: on your account until you delete them, or for a single split, behind the link we email you for 30 days. Submitted descriptions are kept for 30 days to investigate problems. You can delete a project from My projects at any time. ### Can I separate one image without an account? Yes. A single split costs $1.90 for one image, up to 17 layers, all included, no account needed. Choose the image and click pay in the workspace; the image is uploaded then, and the layer model runs after the payment. If 3 tries return no layers, the payment is refunded automatically. If you are not happy with the layers, the workspace lets you refund it yourself once. We email you a link to the result, which works on any device for 30 days. ### What is a credit and how much does a split cost? One credit is one layer returned, background layer included. A split returns at most 17 layers; you need at least 5 credits to start and you are charged for the layers returned. Up to 17 credits of your balance are held while the model works, and the part you did not use goes back. If the model fails or returns nothing, nothing is charged. ### What if the model returns more layers than my balance covers? The credits that were held are used, and the project waits for the difference. You see the number of layers, their names and positions, but the layer files are not available until you add the missing credits; then only the difference is charged. Credits already charged are not returned if you do not add the difference. ### Do credits expire? Pack credits never expire. Pro and Ultra credits are issued each month and unused ones expire at the end of that month. The yearly plan is paid once a year and issues 300 credits each month; they do not add up. ### How do I cancel Pro? Open Account, then Billing, then Manage subscription. You can cancel at any time: the plan stays active until the end of the period you paid for and does not renew. The current period is not refunded. ## Pages - [Unmerge: image to layers](https://unmerge.app/): Unmerge splits a flat image into named transparent layers, fills in what was hidden behind them, and exports a layered PSD.
